| Running TagIt or
TagItLite on Windows 7 |
| |
|
| While TagIt or TagItLite will not
work on Vista without setting the compatibility mode to XP, they
will appear to work with Windows 7 but with some potential
problems. Therefore it is strongly recommended that
the compatibility mode be set to XP
when using Windows 7. |
| Caution: If you have
added data without setting the compatibility mode to XP, do not
change the compatibility settings without first reading about
the danger of data loss below. |
| Note: What follows is
my best understanding of the behavior of TagIt or TagItLite
under Windows 7 based on setting or not setting the
compatibility mode to XP. Please let me know at
info@tagityourself.com
if you experience different behavior. |
| |
| A. How to tell if
the compatibility mode is set properly |
| 1. Right click on
the TagIt or TagItLite icon on your desktop. 2. Select
Properties. |
 |
| |
|
| 3. Go to the
Compatibility tab. 4. "Run this program in compatibility
mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3)" is checked.
5. "Run this program as an administrator" is checked. |
 |
| |
|
| |
| B. Compatibility
mode not set to XP |
| If the Compatibility mode is not set
to XP, then Windows 7 creates "Compatibility files" as new data
is added or new files created. Although it make look like
all the files are in this folder (e.g. the data folder for TagIt
shown in the red box), Windows 7 has created "Compatibility
files" as indicated in the red circle. Click on
"Compatibility files" to go to the VirtualStore. |
| |
 |
| |
| This shows the compatibility files
that were created in the VirtualStore by Windows 7 when the
compatibility mode was not set to XP. The path shown in
the red box is in the User\[Your Name] folder. If you try
to find it yourself, you might have trouble since the default is
that these are hidden folders. Click
here to see how to display hidden folders. Although these
same files appear in c:\program files (x86)\tagit\tagitdata, the
items table is only updated in the VirtualStore. This
means that if you switch back and forth between setting the
compatibility mode to XP and not setting it, you may loose your
data. (See below for suggestions on how to deal with
this.)
Also when you Backup, Update, Export and other procedures,
the resulting files may be placed in the VirtualStore, making it
difficult to find or causing some errors. |
 |
| |
| C. Compatibility
mode set to XP |
| When the compatibility mode is set
to XP, the VirtualStore is not used by Windows 7. Backups,
exports, etc are created in the proper directory. Updates
to the program are not likely to create a problem. |
| |
| D. Originally I
did not set the compatibility mode and have entered lots of
items. Now I want to set the compatibility mode but do not
want to lose any of my data. What do I do? |
| 1. Take a look at your data and get
a sense what is there. How many items are there, e.g.? |
| 2. Make a backup of your data
from the File menu. Since you do not have the
compatibility mode set, the backup file may be found in the
VirtualStore. Make sure you can find it. |
| 3. Change the compatibility
mode to XP as shown above in section A. |
| 4. Open the program. If
data seems to be missing, try restoring the backup by going to
the File menu and selecting Restore. |
